Mosquitoes, the Culicidae, are a family of small flies consisting of 3,600 species. The word mosquito (formed by mosca and diminutive -ito) is Spanish and Portuguese for little fly. Mosquitoes have a slender segmented body, one pair of wings, three pairs of long hair-like legs, and specialized, highly elongated, piercing-sucking mouthparts. All mosquitoes drink nectar from flowers; females of some species have in addition adapted to drink blood. The group diversified during the Cretaceous period. Evolutionary biologists view mosquitoes as micropredators, small animals that parasitise larger ones by drinking their blood without immediately killing them. Medical parasitologists view mosquitoes instead as vectors of disease, carrying protozoan parasites or bacterial or viral pathogens from one host to another. Wikipedia

Mosquito Tips

1. Eliminate Breeding Grounds:

  • Change Pet Water Bowls Regularly: Regularly change the water in pet bowls to prevent mosquito larvae from developing.

  • Remove Standing Water: Mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnant water, so eliminate any containers, puddles, or areas where water can pool.

  • Empty Potted Plant Saucers: Regularly empty and clean plant saucers, as they can hold water.

  • Clean Gutters: Ensure gutters are clear and free of debris to prevent water buildup.

2. Use Mosquito Traps:

  • Mosquito Traps: Consider using mosquito traps that attract and kill mosquitoes, either commercially available or DIY options.

3. Install Mosquito Netting:

  • Install Mosquito Netting: Install netting over windows and doors to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.

4. Use Natural Repellents:

  • Citronella Candles:

Burn citronella candles to deter mosquitoes with their scent.

  • Mosquito-Repelling Plants:

Plant mosquito-repelling plants like lavender, rosemary, and basil around your home.

  • Essential Oils:

Use essential oils like citronella, eucalyptus, or lavender in diffusers or as topical repellents.

  • Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus:

Oil of lemon eucalyptus is a natural mosquito repellent recommended by the EPA and CDC.

5. Other Tips:

  • Wear Light-Colored Clothing:

Mosquitoes are more attracted to dark colors, so wear light-colored clothing to reduce your visibility.

  • Stay Indoors During Peak Mosquito Hours:

Mosquitoes are most active during dusk and dawn, so try to stay indoors during these times.

  • Use Fans:

Fans can disrupt mosquito flight and make it harder for them to find you.

  • Consider DEET-Based Repellents:

If natural repellents aren't effective, consider using repellents containing DEET.
