The oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis), also known as the waterbug (as they live in damp areas) or black cockroach (as their bodies are mostly dark), is a large species of cockroach, adult males being 18–29 mm (23⁄32–1+5⁄32 in) and adult females being 20–27 mm (25⁄32–1+1⁄16 in). It is dark brown or black in color and has a glossy body. The female has a somewhat different appearance from the male, appearing to be wingless at a casual glance, but is brachypterous, having non-functional wings just below her head. She has a wider body than the male. The male has long wings, which cover three quarters of the abdomen and are brown in color, and has a narrower body. Both of them are flightless. Wikipedia

Oriental Cockroach Tips

1. Sanitation and Prevention:

  • Address Moisture Problems: Fix leaky pipes and faucets, as roaches are attracted to moisture.

  • Clean Regularly: Thoroughly clean your home, especially kitchens and bathrooms, to remove food crumbs and spills that attract roaches.

  • Empty Trash Regularly: Dispose of trash promptly and ensure garbage cans have tight-fitting lids.

  • Store Food Properly: Keep food in airtight containers to prevent roaches from accessing it.

2. Sealing Entry Points:

  • Seal Cracks and Gaps: Caulk or seal any cracks or gaps in walls, floors, and around pipes to prevent roaches from entering.

  • Install Screens: Ensure windows and doors have tight-fitting screens to keep roaches out.

3. Control Measures:

  • Bait Traps:

Use bait traps that attract roaches with food and then kill them.

  • Insecticide Sprays:

Use insecticide sprays to kill roaches on contact, but follow label instructions carefully.

  • Diatomaceous Earth:

Sprinkle diatomaceous earth in areas where roaches are active, as it can kill them by dehydrating their exoskeletons.

  • Boric Acid:

Boric acid is a natural insecticide that can be used to kill roaches. Mix it with sugar and place it in areas where roaches are active.

  • Baking Soda and Sugar:

Mix baking soda and sugar and place it in areas where roaches are active. The sugar attracts the roaches, and the baking soda disrupts their digestive system.

4. Natural Remedies:

  • Peppermint Oil:

Roaches are repelled by the scent of peppermint oil, so you can spray it around your home.

  • Lemon Juice:

Roaches are also repelled by the scent of lemon juice, so you can spray it around your home.

  • Bay Leaves:

Bay leaves can be used to deter roaches. Crush them and place them in areas where roaches are active.

5. Professional Help:

  • Contact a Pest Control Professional: If you have a severe roach infestation, it's best to contact a professional pest control company.
